Sur il Foss 2317 m
Soul of a mountain
NAIRS october 2008
To my own surprise it is a composition for a violin and
her violinist singing and playing.
It was inspired by a trip up the Val de menger in the
Swiss National Park that we undertook on a Tuesday
early in october.
overwhelmed by the beauty of the landscape, in this
piece I am giving the musician not only melodies and
noises to perform, but also a voice, a direct unfiltered
expression.
most of the appearing melodies are folk tunes inspired
by Ländler from Graubünden but an influence of Jiddish
folk music that may have swept over land from the Scuol
Palace in Nairs – the largest and all-year-open Kosher
Hotel of Europe – cannot be overheard. Not least, the
postauto – call, that is a major sixth downwards plus a
fourth interval upwards, is finding its memorial here.
We heard it calling many times a day. This will soon
be history since the serpent road it took will no longer
be maintained and Vulpera will be reached with a new
bridge, now looking like a big ‚T’.
The postauto tune is also the beginning of a German
folk-song ‚Winde wehen, Schiffe gehen weit ins ferne
Land’ (winds are blowing, ships are going into the far
country). This song my mum used to sing predominantly
when I was a child, living by the seaside. And when
listening to the verses ‚und des matrosen allerliebster
Schatz bleibt weinend stehen am Strand’ (and the love
of the seaman stays ashore cyring). I still recall the ambivalance
of yearning for the far and unknown like the
seaman and the lover’s passion of farewell – A revair.
