The Macaulay Collection of Musical I nstruments , Edinburgh
The University of Edinburgh has been given a magnificent collection
of musical instruments by Anne Macaulay. They are now on display
at the Edinburgh University Collection of Historie Musical
Instruments , Reid Concert Hall , Bristo Square*. The first instalment
of Mr s Macaulay ' s collection was given in 1977 and the balance
recently .
Anne Macaulay was born in Fife , worked in the paper making industry
and trained as an aeroplane pilot before marr iage . She was
fascinated by the sounds of the lute and the guitar as a child,
and this led to her passionale interest in plucked string instruments
and their history. For several years she promoted concerts
in Edinburgh , attracting the world's finest guitarists and lutenists.
Over a period of years she has built up her collection of
instruments , and now she is writing a far - reaching account of the
history of s tringed instruments back to Apol1o ' s 1yre of ancient
civi1isation and ear1ier.
This gift of 51 instrumenls places the University of Edinburgh in
an unrivalled position for students , makers and performers
of the historica1 guitar who wish to learn from contact with the
finest examp1es from every period. Already , in recent years , severa1
copies have been made from these historical instruments for
use in the performance of early music on appropriate instruments .
