One drama, one city, hundreds of events The Munich Faust-Festival
»Everyone should have the
chance to rediscover Goethe’s Faust«;
this is what Roger Diederen, Director of
the Munich Kunsthalle, states is the aim
of the Faust Festival. When working on
the exhibition entitled »Du bist Faust –
Goethes Drama in der Kunst« (You are
Faust – Goethe’s Drama in Art), he discovered
the complexity, as well as the
topicality, of the material for himself and
shared his enthusiasm with the creative
forces of the city. This is how the concept
for the festival as a joint initiative
between the Munich Kunsthalle and the
Gasteig cultural centre emerged.
Munich is featuring Goethe’s most
famous drama for five months: from 23rd
February until 29th July, over 200 partners
and institutes are presenting their
»Faust« themed projects throughout the
city. The programme includes exhibitions,
concerts, film screenings, lectures, literary
events, theatre productions, dance exhibitions,
parties, guided tours, photo competitions
and web series – individual perspectives
are developed, creative facets
emerge and unexpected approaches to
this unique work of German literature
are opened up in dizzying variety.
»Faust« is unquestionably still contemporary
today; he is the prototypical modern
man – engaged in a tireless search
and never achieving his goal. The drama
deals with the major issues that occupy
mankind: its seductability, morality and
social structure.
