Despite a calmer tone to the market towards the<br />

end of the year, fixing levels for larger gearless<br />

and geared vessels remained more or less static<br />

in December. Maxi-panamax units registered<br />

some slight losses, narrowing the gap with rate<br />

levels for baby panamaxes in the very low 4,000’s<br />

$/day. Spot demand for gearless 2,800 TEU units<br />

came off, still availability remains very tight.<br />

rose due to lack of employment opportunities<br />

for periods other than ultra-short durations.<br />

Even so geared units in Asia continued to fix<br />

at mid-6,000’s $ (Wenchong 1700) or 6,000 $/day<br />

flat (B170). In the Mediterranean the feeder<br />

market eroded a little further due to numerous<br />

spot positions of ships around 1,000 TEU.<br />
