Schaulager houses the collection of the Emanuel Hoffmann
Foundation and is dedicated to the preservation, study and
presentation of modern and contemporary art. It is primarily
geared towards professionals and students, but occasionally
hosts exhibitions and events that are open to the general public.

SPIELZEUG WELTEN MUSEUM BASEL
With over 6000 soft toys, dolls, toy grocers’ shops, dolls’
houses and miniatures, the Spielzeug Welten Museum is one
of a kind in Europe. Located in the heart of Basel, it is
home to the world’s largest collection of teddies comprising
over 2500 bears. Its scope is further enhanced by its many
temporary exhibitions.

Christmas Tree Animals
More than six hundred creatures will be crawling, flying,
swimming and hopping around this year’s Christmas
exhibition at the Spielzeug Welten Museum, demonstrating
just how diverse the animal figures adorning Christmas
trees were even hundred years ago.
18.3.–29.10.2023 25 Years of Toy Worlds –
the Anniversary Exhibition
Augmented reality brings the teddy bears, dolls and toys to
life. Why do children like to play? Why do they have to play?
And how do they experience the world through play? A series
of interviews provides insights into how playing has changed
from ancient times to the present and how essential play is for
our children’s development. The accompanying programme
of events encourages everyone to join in the fun and games
and celebrate together.
