Elegante, dunkle Holzregale,
massive Glasflakons in Marmor-Optik:
Betritt man die Kosmetik-
Boutique hier im Hotel Bayerischer Hof,
ist das ein bisschen wie eine Zeitreise in
ein vergangenes Jahrhundert. Genauer
gesagt, ins Jahr 1803 – das Jahr in dem
Jean Vincent Buly den Grundstein für die
Marke „Officine Universelle Buly 1803“
legte, die Victoire de Taillac gemeinsam
mit ihrem Mann Ramdan Touhami seit
circa zehn Jahren mit neuem Leben füllt.
Die pompöse, antike Ästhetik der einstigen
Apotheken-Brand zu erhalten, war
dem Paar dabei wichtig. Nicht nur, weil
sie an ein goldenes Kosmetik-Zeitalter in
Frankreich erinnert. sondern auch, weil
ED FRAGRANCES TAKE THE BEAUTY EXPE-
RIENCE TO A NEW LEVEL
Elegant, dark wooden shelves, delicately
painted tubes, solid glass flacons with a
marble look: entering the cosmetics boutique
here at the Hotel Bayerischer Hof is a
bit like travelling back in time to a bygone
century. To be more precise, to the year
1803 - the year in which Jean Vincent Buly
laid the foundation stone for the “Officine
Universelle Buly 1803” brand, which Victoire
de Taillac and her husband Ramdan
Touhami have been breathing new life
into for around ten years. Preserving the
pompous, antique aesthetic of the former
pharmacy brand was important to the
couple. Not only because it is reminiscent
of a golden age of cosmetics in France, but
also because Victoire de Taillac believes
that beauty today is far too often all about
function. The products from “Officine Universelle
Buly 1803”, however, are beautiful -
and therefore have a holistic, almost poetic
effect.
What role does the design of cosmetic
products play?
It contributes to the fact that products not
only touch the skin, but also the mind and
make the spirit wander. Products that look
beautiful - like a good work of art - last for
a moment. Because you experience them
with all your senses: not just sensory or by
smell, but also visually.
Why does your brand’s aesthetic
appeal today?
I think that, especially in uncertain times,
many people are longing for tradition.
We have hit this nerve. Some of the motifs
on our products still come from the “Catalogue
Antique”, i.e. the original design
from the 19th century. For example, the
Greek deities on the “Huile Antique” body
oil. Other designs, such as the hand on
the blue “Pomade Concrete” tube, were
redesigned by my husband.
What inspires you?
Even though we are “very French”, we are
interested in beauty rituals from all over
the world. We then curate them - just like
artists - and incorporate them into our
style. Incidentally, that’s what the “universal”
in our name stands for.
FOTOS CLEMENT VAYSSIERES, NATTEE RATSAMEEJARATTAKORN, MOHAMED-KHALIL, PR
es in der Beauty heute viel zu oft nur um
Funktion gehe, findet Victoire de Taillac.
Die Produkte von „Officine Universelle
Buly 1803“ indes sind wunderschön –
und entfalten dadurch eine ganzheitliche,
fast schon poetische Wirkung.
Welche Rolle spielt das Design von
Kosmetikprodukten?
Es trägt dazu bei, dass Produkte nicht
nur die Haut, sondern auch das Gemüt
berühren und den Geist zum Wandern
bringen. Produkte, die schön aussehen,
halten – wie ein gutes Kunstwerk – den
Moment an. Weil man sie mit allen Sinnen
erlebt: nicht nur sensorisch oder
über den Geruch, sondern auch visuell.
Warum kommt die Ästhetik Ihrer
Marke heute an?
Ich denke, dass sich gerade in unsicheren
Zeiten viele nach Tradition sehnen.
Diesen Nerv treffen wir. Einige unserer
Motive auf den Produkten entstammen
noch dem „Catalogue Antique“, also der
ursprünglichen Gestaltung aus dem
19. Jahrhundert. Etwa die griechischen
Gottheiten auf dem Körperöl „Huile
Antique“. Andere Designs wie die Hand
auf der blauen „Pomade Concrete“-Tube
hat mein Mann neugestaltet.
Was inspiriert Sie dabei?
Auch wenn wir „very French“ sind, interessieren
uns Beauty-Rituale der ganzen
Welt. Die kuratieren wir dann – ähnlich
wie Künstler*innen – und verarbeiten sie
in unserem Stil. Dafür steht übrigens das
„Universelle“ in unserem Namen.
Wie setzt sich der Name ansonsten
zusammen?
„Buly“ ist der Nachname des Erst-
Gründers und „Officine“ das Wort für
Geschäft. Weil Beauty etwas so Persönliches
ist, legen wir viel Wert auf
das Erlebnis in unseren Stores, wie
dem im Bayerischen Hof. Es ist wichtig,
dass man sich Zeit nimmt und beraten
lässt. Wir verstehen Kosmetik als
etwas, das Kontakt fordert und interaktiv
ist. Deshalb mögen wir es auch,
mit den Produkten zum Nachdenken
anzuregen.
Wie das?
Zum Beispiel mit überraschenden
Düften wie etwa in unserer Parfüm-
Kollektion „Vegetable Garden“. Die
dreht sich um Gerüche von Gemüse.
Wir haben uns gedacht: Was wäre,
wenn man Karotten wie eine Rose sieht?
Welches ist für Sie das poetischste
Duft-Ingrediens?
Eine Art „verbrannte Zypresse“. Dieser
Duft wird an den Eingängen japanischer
Tempel verwendet. Er ist holzig,
gleichzeitig rauchig und entwickelt
irgendwann sogar eine dezente Frische.
Es ist ein unerwarteter und ganz
einzigartiger Duft.
Was macht ihre Düfte außerdem
besonders?
Dass sie nicht alkohol- sondern wasserbasiert
sind. Das macht sie unverfälschter
und intimer. Während sich Düfte auf
Alkoholbasis – das liegt an der Molekül-
Struktur – auf der Haut immer verändern,
riechen solche auf Wasserbasis auf
Papier genauso wie später auf der Haut.
Klingt modern …
Ist es auch. Viele denken, dass wir als
Retro-Brand hinten dran sind. Das
stimmt natürlich nicht. Gerade bei
unseren Skincare-Produkten testen wir
regelmäßig Inhaltsstoffe und schauen
auch, was wirklich wirksam ist.
Und was ist das?
Pflanzenöle. Die Fettsäuren können
von der Haut besonders gut aufgenommen
werden und nähren meiner
Meinung nach besser als chemisch
kreierte Stoffe. Weniger ist bei uns mehr
– außerdem spielt Natürlichkeit für uns
eine große Rolle.
Wie nachhaltig sind Sie?
Auch wenn wir unsere Öle aus der
ganzen Welt beziehen, fertigen wir jedes
Produkt in Frankreich. Wir verwenden
kein Plastik, sondern ausschließlich
recycelbare Aluminiumverpackungen
und Glas.
Glas ist aber ziemlich schwer und
daher energieaufwändig …
Das stimmt, aber man kann Kosmetik im
Stil des 19. Jahrhunderts nicht in Plastik
verpacken – das ist eine Branding-Sache.
Abgesehen davon sind unsere Glasflakons
nicht zum Entsorgen gedacht
– man kann sie später als Deko weiterverwenden.
In meinem leeren „Huile
Antique“ zum Beispiel stehen Kerzen
oder Kosmetikpinsel im Bad. Das ist ein
weiterer Vorteil, wenn die Produkte in
sich kleine Kunstwerke sind.
LIEBE ZUM DETAIL
Jedes „Buly“-Produkt ist kunstvoll
und mit Sorgfalt hergestellt
und verpackt – darauf ist
Victoire de Taillac stolz
How else does the name come together?
“Buly” is the surname of the first founder
and “Officine” is the word for business.
Because beauty is so personal, we attach
great importance to the experience in our
stores, such as the one in the Bayerischer
Hof. It’s important to take your time and
get advice. We see cosmetics as something
that requires contact and is interactive.
That’s why we also like to encourage
people to think with our products, for example
with surprising fragrances such as
those in our “Vegetable Garden” perfume
collection. It revolves around the scent of
vegetables. We thought to ourselves: what
if you could see carrots like a rose?
What is the most poetic fragrance
ingredient for you?
A kind of “burnt cypress”. This scent is
used at the entrances to Japanese temples.
It’s woody, smoky and even develops a
subtle freshness at some point. It is an unexpected
and very unique fragrance, and
what else makes her fragrances special is
that they are not alcohol-based but water-based.
This makes them more genuine
and intimate. While alcohol-based fragrances
always change on the skin - this
is due to the molecular structure - water-based
fragrances smell the same on
paper as they do later on the skin.
Sounds modern...
It is. Many people think that as a retro
brand, we are behind the times. That’s
not true, of course. With our skincare
products in particular, we regularly test
ingredients and also look at what is really
effective, and what that is: vegetable oils.
The fatty acids can be absorbed particularly
well by the skin and, in my opinion,
nourish better than chemically created
substances. For us, less is more - naturalness
is also very important to us.
How sustainable are you?
Even though we source our oils from all
over the world, we manufacture every
product in France. We don’t use plastic,
only recyclable aluminium packaging
and glass.
But glass is quite heavy and therefore
energy-intensive...
That’s true, but you can’t package 19th
century-style cosmetics in plastic - it’s
a branding thing. Apart from that, our
glass bottles are not meant to be thrown
away - you can reuse them later as
decoration. My empty “Huile Antique”,
for example, can be used for candles or
cosmetic brushes in the bathroom. That’s
another advantage when the products are
little works of art in themselves.
