4. 4.8 4. Winch Winch House House (33 (33 & & 34) 34) Two small winch houses survive, which were once used to winch seaplanes down and up the slipways (see Figure 10). Built of brick originally with pitched roofs but building 34 now has a flat reinforced concrete roof. The The The The Brambles Brambles Brambles Brambles (Commanding Commanding Officer’s Officer’s Quarters Quarters) Quarters - (36) (36) The Brambles occupies a corner plot between two seaplane sheds (35 & 36). It faces Marine Parade West while Brambles Road is to the south-east. It is a detached two-storey house requisitioned c.1917 for use as offices. It is constructed of red facing bricks with a hipped roof clad with tiles. � NGR: SU 5583 0111 (36) 4. 4.10 4. 10 10 CAO’s CAO’s CAO’s Offices Offices (38) (38) (38) Located on a corner plot between two seaplanes sheds (37 & 39) at the junction of Unicorn Road, Hermes Road and Brambles Road is building 38. It was constructed in 1935 (date stone), being single-storey with a projecting entrance porch and a later single-pitch annexe. It is built of 9in red brick (with brick quoins), timber-framed roof clad with timber boarding and slate. Windows are timber double hung sashes. � NGR: (38) SU 5585 0114 (38) 4. 4.11 4. 11 Admiralty Type ‘G’ Seaplane Seaplane Shed Shed (39 & 40) Located at the head of the main slipway that faces onto Marine Parade West, the two Admiralty type ‘G’ sheds are the smaller version of the more common Admiralty type ‘F’ seaplane shed that were built on most WWI RNAS seaplane stations. Type ‘G’ sheds consist of a side-opening steel-framed sheds, normally in twelve, 15ft. wide bays (180ft. long), with a span of 60ft. and a clear height of 25ft. A characteristic of this type of shed is the 90ft. long steel lattice girder which supports the main door opening. Wall and roof cladding was originally of ribbed asbestos sheeting but this has usually been replaced with corrugated iron sheeting. � Admiralty type ‘G’ seaplane shed (MT workshops) NGR: SU 5585 0117 (39) � Admiralty type ‘G’ seaplane Shed (NHTU hangar) NGR: SU 5580 0124 (40) During 1969, two bays were removed from building 40 and three bays were also removed from building 39. This has rather upset the balance of the front elevations. Admiralty type ‘G’ sheds are however now very rare structures, only three more are known to survive. Two of these, at Calshot are Listed Grade 2*, while the third at Wimbledon had been dismantled c.1925 at the former RNAS station at Newhaven and bought by the Southern Railway Co. Ltd. This shed was re-erected as a stores building on a site close to what became the British Railway’s Civil Engineering and Signal Telegraph Depot at Wimbledon. 4. 4.12 4. Engine Stripping Shop (PSA PSA Office Office and and Store Store) Store ) (47) (47) Located between Unicorn Road and Implacable Road, this is a 24ft span WWI hut of similar construction to the men’s dormitories (124-126). It was designed by Lieutenant JGN Clifts, RE of the Air Ministry Works and Bricks Department. It was once part of a number of similar huts on this site, used as workshops and stores. � NGR: SU 5582 0130 (47) 37
