Territory 3: Tesino - Vanoi<br />

Geographical characteristics<br />

The Tesino <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Vanoi area includes 5 municipalities, namely Bieno, Canal San Bovo, Castello<br />

Tesino, Cinte Tesino <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Pieve Tesino. It stretches across two comprensori (administrative units<br />

larger than municipalities, but smaller than provinces). The Canal San Bovo municipality stretches<br />

across the Primiero comprensorio, whereas the other <strong>on</strong>es bel<strong>on</strong>g to the Bassa Valsugana <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Tesino<br />

comprensorio, both from the geographic <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> administrative points of view.<br />

The municipalities are not too fracti<strong>on</strong>ated <strong>on</strong> the territory, with the excepti<strong>on</strong>s of Canal San Bovo,<br />

which is divided into 6 inhabited centres <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> 5 inhabited nucleuses, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> that of Castello Tesino, which<br />

has <strong>on</strong>ly <strong>on</strong>e centre, but 5 inhabited nucleuses 4 .<br />

The Tesino plateau st<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>s out for its beautiful, gently undulating, green l<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>scape. It is studded with<br />

pastures <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> cultivated fields, while the woodl<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> in the Vanoi valley, especially <strong>on</strong> the left bank of<br />

the stream of the same name, is the main feature of the area, which has been nicknamed “Trentino’s<br />

green heart”.<br />

The Tesino-Vanoi area is situated in the mountain belt of the Trentino territory, at an average altitude<br />

of 827 metres. As a matter of fact, the altitude ranges from Canal San Bovo’s 757 metres to Cinte<br />

Tesino’s 871 metres, with some hamlets of the five municipalities situated at over 1000 metres above<br />

sea level. The overall surface area exceeds 349 square kilometres <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> accounts for less than 6% of the<br />

surface of the province.<br />
