2.1.3 Poultry Sector in Bangladesh In 2005-06 the total number of poultry birds was 194.82 million and the number of poultry farms was 130 thousand 18 . It is shown from Figure 2.6 that the poultry industry in Bangladesh has flourished in the late 90’s and the number of poultry farm is increasing day by day. Since 2001-02, the rate of growth of poultry farm is about 7% and since 2000-01, the rate of growth of poultry bird is about 5.59% (ibid and own calculation). It is really difficult to get reliable data or statistics on the size of poultry farms in Bangladesh as there is no poultry census in the country. However, Dr. Mahbubur Rahman in an interview (quoted in BCAS, 2005, p. 38) gave a more detail estimate of the farm sizes which are shown in Table 2.1.
