Biogas Plant in poultry sector in the study area: There are about 300 to 350 biogas plants installed by BCSIR in different poultry farms in the district 20 . The number of biogas plants in poultry farms installed by GS is about 150 21 . 2.2.4 Poultry Sector in the Study Area Gazipur district is one of the most densely poultry populated districts in Bangladesh. The district has about 10% of the total poultry farms in the country 22 . The total number of poultry farm in the district is 12471 and the total number of bird is 18.14 million 23 . There are two types of farm in the district: layer farm and broiler farm. The total number of layer farm in the district is 7135 and the total number of layer bird is 11.13 million (ibid). The number of broiler farm is 5336 and the number of broiler bird is 7 million (ibid). The average number of bird in layer and broiler farm is 1560 and 1312 respectively, where as the total average is 1454 (ibid and own calculation). There are 5 upazillas in the district called Gazipur Sadar, Kaliakair, Sreepur, Kapasia and Kaliganj. Among the upazillas Gazipur Sadar has the highest number of poultry farm. The percentages of poultry farm in different upazillas are as follows: Gazipur Sadar 63.85%, Kaliakair 3.95%, Sreepur 7.02%, Kapasia 17.40% and Kaliganj 7.78% (ibid and own calculation).
