electricity from poultry waste at Raj poultry Farm in Faridpur district. The author also visited
Raj Poultry Farm to get an idea about the technology used there and to compare it with other
technologies currently being used in the country as well as in the study area. Besides, two
other farms in Mymensingh district were visited one of which has installed biogas plant to
produce electricity and the other already producing electricity from poultry waste. Visiting
different farms outside the study area revealed that the nature of rearing poultry bird and
energy consumption pattern in poultry farms is similar to that of the study area. It was also
observed that the way of producing biogas from poultry droppings in different poultry farms
is almost similar irrespective of its geographical location in the country. Thus justifies that a
case study in Gazipur district is representative for the whole country.
Moreover, it was the convenience of the author to get access to visit the poultry farms and to
communicate within the study area. Besides, the time constraint limited the author to study
in a particular area. Therefore the author was intent to investigate the potential of electricity
generation from poultry waste in Gazipur district that can be exaggerated for the whole
country as well.
3.2 Sampling Method
Out of five upazillas (sub-strata of district) in the district the survey was conducted in two
upazillas. The upazillas are Sreepur upazilla and Gazipur Sadar upazilla. These upazillas
were selected because in Sreepur upazilla the average number of bird per poultry farm is the
highest in the district and in Gazipur Sadar upazilla the number of poultry farm is the highest
in the district. Moreover, Gazipur Sadar upazilla has the highest number of poultry birds
among the upazillas in the district whereas Sreepur upazilla stands at second position.
In total 50 farms were visited randomly during survey. Out of the 50 farms 25 farms were
visited in Sreepur upazilla and the rest 25 were visited in Gazipur Sadar upazilla. Among
these 50 farms 26 farms already have biogas plant and the rest 24 farms do not have any
biogas plant. As Grameen Shakti is currently disseminating biogas technology in Maona
uninon under Sreepur upazilla, the number of poultry farms with biogas plant is higher in
Sreepur upazilla than in Gazipur Sadar upazilla. Figure 3.1 shows the sample distribution
according to upazilla and the biogas plant.
