2.2 Study Area Background 2.2.1 Geography Gazipur district lies between 23º53´ and 24º21´ north latitude and 90º09’ and 90º22’ east longitude (BBS, 2006, p. 1). It is bordered by Kishoreganj and Maymenshing on the north, Dhaka, Narayanganj and Narsingdi districts on the south, Narsingdi district on the east and Dhaka and Tangail district on the west (ibid). 2.2.2 Key Statistics of the Study Area Gazipur zila was previously a sub-division of Dhaka district. It was upgraded to a district in 1984 (BBS, 2006, p. 1). Xi, 1, 9 2.2.3 Available Energy information in the study area Electricity: In Gazipur district as a whole the total 56.39% (BBS, 2006, p. 146) of household is grid connected which is higher than the country average of 33%. In the rural areas the percentage of household which is grid connected is about 33.47% whereas in pauroshava (Municipility) and in urban areas the percentages are 91.49% and 67.72% respectively (ibid and own calculation). Natural Gas: The district is partially covered by natural gas network. There are about 42 km natural gas pipe line network in the district.
