<strong>Parks</strong> and <strong>Recreation</strong> Master <strong>Plan</strong> Update 2011<br />

<strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Marquette</strong><br />

Sandy Knoll Elementary School – Located on the corner <strong>of</strong> Seventh and East Michigan<br />

Streets, the Sandy Knoll School has 13 swings, 3 climbing apparatus, a slide, a merry-go-round,<br />

3 see-saws, a basketball court (1 hoop), 2 tennis courts, a paved play area, an open play area,<br />

and a multi-purpose gymnasium.<br />

Father <strong>Marquette</strong> Elementary School – A parochial elementary school located on the corner<br />

<strong>of</strong> North Fourth and Fisher Streets, Bishop Baraga School has an open play area and a<br />

multipurpose gymnasium.<br />

Father <strong>Marquette</strong> Middle School – Located on the corner <strong>of</strong> Presque Isle Avenue and West<br />

College Street, this parochial school has basketball court, tether ball pole, an open play area,<br />

and a multi-purpose gymnasium.<br />

Public Programs and Events<br />

A very wide variety <strong>of</strong> recreation programs, activities and events are available to a diverse range<br />

<strong>of</strong> population segments in the <strong>Marquette</strong> area. They are sponsored by a variety <strong>of</strong> government<br />

units, school districts, special interest groups and private businesses. Many programs are<br />

available regardless <strong>of</strong> place <strong>of</strong> residence.<br />

Senior Citizens<br />

Since its inception in 1974, the <strong>Marquette</strong> senior services/community center located in the <strong>City</strong><br />

building (currently the Helen I. Johnson Service Center) has developed a wide range <strong>of</strong> social,<br />

educational and recreational programs to increase the quality and promote the independence <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Marquette</strong>‘s older residents.<br />

NMU (e.g. swimming) also provides senior programs. The following is a listing <strong>of</strong> recreational<br />

programs <strong>of</strong>fered by the <strong>Marquette</strong> Service Center:<br />

<strong>Marquette</strong> is the site <strong>of</strong> many well-organized event activities and attractions. In cooperation with<br />

various local organizations, the <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Marquette</strong> assists in coordinating a variety <strong>of</strong> the special<br />
