Upper Peninsula Children’s Museum<br />

This museum is geared to (and a good part designed by) tots and youngsters. Housed in a<br />

completely renovated downtown building on Baraga Avenue, it features interpretive tours and<br />

―hands on‖ interaction with exhibits that promote an understanding <strong>of</strong> science, health and<br />

culture.<br />

Shiras <strong>Plan</strong>etarium<br />

Located at <strong>Marquette</strong> Senior High School on Fair Avenue, the recently renovated planetarium<br />

<strong>of</strong>fers a schedule <strong>of</strong> public astronomical shows and exhibits for all age groups.<br />

The <strong>Marquette</strong> area has been blessed with a diverse range <strong>of</strong> natural assets which lend<br />

themselves to outstanding recreational use and cultural activities. <strong>Marquette</strong> is characterized by<br />

forests, rivers, rugged topography, rock outcrops, lengthy sand beaches and the largest body <strong>of</strong><br />

freshwater in the world, Lake Superior. Weather and climate too make their mark—beautiful<br />

temperature summers and a very distinct winter season.<br />

Because <strong>of</strong> its unique natural setting, and the fact that <strong>Marquette</strong> is the center for a large region<br />

and has many visitors annually, the <strong>City</strong>‘s recreational needs are unlike those <strong>of</strong> many smaller<br />

size communities.<br />

The <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Marquette</strong> has an adopted Master <strong>Plan</strong> which is a long range guide for the use <strong>of</strong><br />

land in the community. It consists <strong>of</strong> a map depicting a desirable arrangement <strong>of</strong> land uses<br />

along with supporting documentation and policy recommendations. Areas proposed for parks,<br />

recreation areas, and open space reflect ―potentials‖ for recreation which relate to tourism and
