2.8 Multipath<br />
The term multipath denotes the possibility of EM wave propagation along var-<br />
ious paths from the transmitter to the receiver [9]. Due to multipath the radiation<br />
pattern of the transmitter changes. In RFID if the radiation pattern of the reader<br />
antenna changes the readability of the reader changes. This is the sole reason for<br />
the difference in the radiation pattern of the reader in different environment. The<br />
reflection, absorption of radiations by the objects around the reader constitute the<br />
environment characterization. Even presence of human changes the radiation pat-<br />
tern of the antenna [14]. The effect of multipath increases with the distance between<br />
the transmitter and receiver. In this thesis we have done simulation experiments of<br />
human body showing how the radiation pattern changes. One of the reason is the<br />
reflection of RF radiations around the human body.<br />
