IDA KERALA STATE SECRETARYíS MESSAGE Its indeed heartening to know that IDA Kunnamkulam is publishing a hand book to dental surgeons about hemophilia and dentistry .Its a fact that among the estimated hemophilic patients of around 4,00000, many thousands of affected are enduring life without proper access to treatment and care. Itís time to express our courage and perseverance ,accelerate our pace of progress and remove the remaining barriers for adequate care. I am sure this handbook will provide a basis for the development of local protocols for the dental treatment of patients with inherited bleeding disorders. Dr.Shibu Rajagopal Hon. IDA KERALA STATE CDE CHAIRMANíS MESSAGE The arrival of a hemophiliac patient in the waiting room often sends shudders down the spine of the dentist. The lack of in depth knowledge often hinders the management of such patients.Routine dental procedures do not generally involve bleeding; consequently, there is no contraindication to routine dental treatment for hemophiliacs. Preventive dentistry is vital to the younger hemophiliac patient world-wide; older hemophiliacs may require extensive treatment to restore mouths that have been neglected. Surgical dental procedures may be performed for hemophiliacs, but they must be judiciously coordinated by the dental and medical team. The facilities and treatment available will determine the feasibility of treating such patients in the hospital or on an outpatient basis. It is my earnest wish to be able to impart useful knowledge so as to arm the dentist with know-how to manage the hemophilac patient. I hope this handbook will serve this purpose and wish to thank all those individuals who have worked to make this a reality. with regards Deebu J Mathew CDE Chairman
