FRANCE – RED WINE CONT’D
BORDEAUX
SENSATION DE CHÂTEAU
GRAND BOURDIEU 2006
AC Graves
(D. Haverlan, Vitic.)
TASTING NOTE: (Translated from the French) An
appropriate name for this wine full of sensations.
The first one, with its deep dark colour, relates
to the visual sense. The second one relates to
the sense of smell by offering powerful aromas of
vanilla, pepper and toasted oak. The third one
relates to the gustative sense by presenting a
strong body, generous and fat on the palate. Give
it two or three years and serve it with tenderloin
or a roast. Score: HHK (Guide Hachette, 2010)
199182 (XD) 750 mL $19.95 3
BEAUJOLAIS
VIGNERONNEMENT VOTRE
FLEURIE 2009
AC
TASTING NOTE: The Gamay grape began to be
cultivated in abundance in the 15th century. This
Beaujolais is fresh and fruity, with a floral nose,
and refreshing flavours of plum, black cherry,
and spice. Enjoy with quiche, or a mild coconut
curry. (VINTAGES panel, March 2010)
185652 (XD) 750 mL $14.95 1
LOIRE
DOMAINE DE PEYANNE 2009
AC Saumur
(Cave de Saumur)
This wine won a Gold Medal at the Concours
Général Agricole in Paris in 2010.
TASTING NOTE: The Saumur region is particularly
noted for their terrific Cabernet Francs. A bright
purple colour and a floral, cherry-infused nose
make way for peppery flavours of plum, black
raspberry, black cherry and cassis. There’s good
balance here, and serious length. A delectable
addition to savoury vegetable stew, or ham in
a rosemary-mustard sauce. (VINTAGES panel,
DOMAINE GARDIES MAS LAS CABES
ROUGE 2009
AC Côtes du Roussillon
TASTING NOTE: 60% Syrah, 30% Grenache and
10% Carignan. There’s fresh plum and soft florals
on the nose, followed by a generous helping of
ripe black fruit, strawberry and raspberry – very
rich and juicy on the palate. A medium- to fullbodied
red with nice, balanced acidity, a supple
finish, and great length. A winning addition to
lamb chops or saucy pork spare ribs. (VINTAGES
panel, April 2010)
194894 (D) 750 mL $15.95 2
LE SECRET DES CAPITELLES
SAINT-CHINIAN 2009
AC
(Cave des Vignerons de Saint-Chinian)
TASTING NOTE: Saint-Chinian is considered to
be the oldest winemaking area in the Midi
region, going back to Roman times. This wine
sports a fresh raspberry nose, with flavours
of black plum, berry, dried herbs, cola and tar
spinning on the palate with a bit of spritz – all
leading to a spicy finish. A medium-bodied red
with nice harmony and length. Très bon with grilled
calamari, or roasted chicken in a mushroom
sauce. (VINTAGES panel, April 2010)
156299 (XD) 750 mL $14.95 2
RHÔNE
DOMAINE BELLE LES PIERRELLES
CROZES-HERMITAGE 2007
AC
TASTING NOTE: The Crozes-Hermitage appellation
is the largest in the Northern Rhône, and relies
on Syrah as the sole variety for its red wines. This
earthy red has smoky aromas and flavours of
cassis, blueberry and black plum, as well as some
juicy olive notes. It has nice structure and length,
and a dry, savoury finish. A wonderful dinner
companion to butter chicken, or pork in black
bean sauce. (VINTAGES panel, April 2010)
041921 (XD) 750 mL $22.95 2
