LA MADONNINA CHIANTI CLASSICO RISERVA 2007 DOCG (Fratelli Triacca) TASTING NOTE: … The bouquet is rich, with red berry fruit supported by dusky greenish accents and some hints of yellow peach, and also pleasing mentholated accents. Nice balance and quite a bit to say. On the palate it’s fresh, with rich cherry plum fruit supported more by iodine bitterness than acidity, and by smooth sweet tannins that flow into a decidedly bitter finish … will drink nicely with grilled meats and roasts, especially leaner meats such as roast beef, cooked rare and sliced fairly thickly. It grew upon me. TASTING NOTE: The 2007 Chianti Classico is simply marvelous. A touch rounder and more generous than is typically the case, the Chianti Classico reveals intense aromatics that meld into a core of rich, expansive red fruit. The open-knit, giving quality of 2007 is on full display, while clean, mineral notes on the finish add a measure of clarity and balance. Despite the wine’s ripeness, this remains one of the more understated, hushed Chiantis of the vintage. Readers who enjoy the Burgundian side of Sangiovese will flip out over this wine. WHAT MAKES A GREAT VINTAGE? A good start, for starters. More specifically an early start: mild 2007 spring temperatures in Tuscany kept frost at bay and led to early budding, which meant extra ripening time. Sunshine was plentiful throughout the long growing season, with picture-perfect autumn weather giving growers the freedom to choose exactly the right moment to bring in the harvest. These serendipitous conditions led to finely balanced wines with deeply complex aromatics, ripe tannins, and velvety textures. VINTAGES 7
