ITALY – WHITE WINE
PIEDMONT
DEZZANI MORELLI MOSCATO
D’ASTI 2009
DOCG
On the most romantic day of the year, Moscato
d’Asti may be the perfect wine. Beautifully sweet,
gently frizzante and low in alcohol (it usually
tops out at 5.5% by volume), it is just flat-out
scrumptious. Wonderful on its own after a meal,
or for sipping while you enjoy intimate evening
conversation.
ITALY – RED WINE
PIEDMONT
ABBONA LA PIEVE BAROLO 2005
DOCG
The great Nebbiolo-based wines of Barolo rarely
come at this fine a price, so this is the perfect
opportunity to sample this Piedmontese classic.
The 2005 vintage is just starting to hit the
market, so this also offers an opportune sneakpeek
at the character of the vintage. Look for
aromas of plum, truffles, raspberry and cedar in
this wine. The tannins should be firm, but there
will be plenty of fruit here to to bring balance.
DIEGO CONTERNO BALUMA
NEBBIOLO D’ALBA 2008
DOC
Quite simply put, Nebbiolo gives us some of the
very best red wines from Italy. This example
shows lovely notes of cherry, blackberry and
raspberry, prunes, and a lifting violet character.
Culminates in a delicious, fruit-laden finish. Enjoy
this with a spicy meat dish.
LA GIRONDA LA GENA
BARBERA D’ASTI 2006
DOCG
TASTING NOTE: Barbera d’Asti la Gena 2006
is also extremely good ... flaunting a bouquet
of violets and freshness that underlines its
persistence and rounded fruit. Score: BBM
VENETO
I CASTEI AMARONE DELLA
VALPOLICELLA CLASSICO 2006
DOC
(Michele Castellani)
This wine is a hedonistic delight. Filled with
sweet blackberry fruit and coffee aromas on the
nose, which carry forward on the decadently
plush palate. A superlative value in Amarone.
Enjoy with a selection of fine cheeses, or dark
chocolate, or even with pastries such as pain au
chocolat. It will also happily reward 2-4+ years
in a cellar.
MASI BROLO DI CAMPOFIORIN 2006
IGT Rosso del Veronese
Silver Medal winner at the Decanter World Wine
Awards 2009. This gentler variation on Amarone
is created using the appassimento technique.
The harvested grapes are dried on mats for
approximately one month, allowing the aromas
and flavours to intensify. The resulting wine is
filled with aromas of plum, chocolate, cherry,
tobacco and new leather. Try it with richer meat
dishes such as slow-cooked roast beef.
