Combed decoration: A wavy, festooned, feathery,<br />

or zigzag pattern of decoration in two or more colors,<br />

produced by applying threads of opaque glass of a<br />

color different from that of the molten glass body. The<br />

threads are rolled into the glass body by marvering,<br />

after which they are combed or dragged to achieve<br />

Commedia dell’arte figures<br />

(from italian): Figures representing<br />

the 16 characters in<br />

italian commedia dell’arte, a<br />

theatrical genre that was especially<br />

popular in the 17th and<br />

18th centuries. Flameworkers made<br />

models of these figures, often copying<br />

illustrations in lelio riccoboni’s<br />

Histoire du théâtre italien (1728–1731).<br />

Compote: A dish, usually with a stem and a<br />

base, and sometimes with a cover, for serving<br />

compote (fruits cooked in syrup), or a smaller<br />

dish of similar form used for individual servings.<br />

Concentric paperweight: A type of paperweight<br />

in which the slices of canes are arranged<br />

in concentric circles.<br />

Condiment set: A group of matching vessels,<br />

usually with a tray or rack, that includes containers<br />

for salt, pepper, and mustard, and perhaps<br />

also cruets for oil and vinegar. See also Castor.
