about 1825 and about 1865, it was fashionable to drink
from saucers, and cups were placed on cup plates to
avoid staining the tablecloth.
Cupping glass: A small cup in which a partial vacuum
is created for cupping. Cupping is the technique of
drawing blood to the surface of the body, usually for
bloodletting.
Custard glass: A vessel for an individual serving of custard,
a sweetened mixture of milk and eggs, which can
be baked, boiled, or frozen.
Cutting: The technique whereby glass is removed from
the surface of an object by grinding it with rotating
wheels made of stone, wood, and cork. The first stage
of the process employs a stone wheel under a continuous
stream of water. later, wheels of fine-grained stone
and wood, fed with various abrasives, are used to grind
