Cup plate. U.S., about 1831. D. 9.4 cm.<br />

about 1825 and about 1865, it was fashionable to drink<br />

from saucers, and cups were placed on cup plates to<br />

avoid staining the tablecloth.<br />

Cupping glass: A small cup in which a partial vacuum<br />

is created for cupping. Cupping is the technique of<br />

drawing blood to the surface of the body, usually for<br />

bloodletting.<br />

Custard glass: A vessel for an individual serving of custard,<br />

a sweetened mixture of milk and eggs, which can<br />

be baked, boiled, or frozen.<br />

Cutting: The technique whereby glass is removed from<br />

the surface of an object by grinding it with rotating<br />

wheels made of stone, wood, and cork. The first stage<br />

of the process employs a stone wheel under a continuous<br />

stream of water. later, wheels of fine-grained stone<br />

and wood, fed with various abrasives, are used to grind<br />
