Stained glass: The generic name for decorative windows<br />

made of pieces of colored glass fitted into cames<br />

and set in iron frames. strictly speaking, the term is inaccurate<br />

because, in addition to glass colored by staining,<br />

glaziers used, and continue to use, glass colored<br />

throughout by metallic oxide, glass colored by flashing,<br />

and glass decorated with enamel.<br />

Staining: in glassworking, the process of coloring the<br />

surface of glass by the application of silver sulfide or silver<br />

chloride, which is then fired at a relatively low temperature.<br />

The silver imparts a yellow, brownish yellow,<br />

or ruby-colored stain, which can be painted, engraved,<br />

or etched.<br />

Stangenglas (German, “pole glass”): A tall, narrow cylindrical<br />

drinking vessel (hence the name “pole glass”),<br />

usually with a pedestal foot.<br />

Stem: The narrow part of a goblet or tazza that separates<br />
