CHAPTER III Results Grief in Women Religious 31 Descriptive Statistics for all variables of interest are presented in Table 3. In order to examine grief over time, a residualized grief score was calculated, representing grief at time 2 after controlling for grief at time 1. Hypothesis 1 was that there is a relation between social support and grief such that the social support of women religious is negatively related to grief symptoms over time. This was tested using the Pearson correlation coefficient. Social support was not related to grief symptoms over time. Time 1 social support was not significantly related to grief symptoms at time 2 regardless of whether grief at time 1 was controlled (see Table 4). Hypothesis 2 was that there is a relation between spirituality and grief such that the spirituality of women religious is negatively related to grief symptoms over time (see Table 4). This was tested using the Pearson correlation coefficient. Time 1 spirituality was not related to grief symptoms at time 2 regardless of whether grief at time 1 was controlled. Hypothesis 3 was that there is a significant interaction between women religious lifestyles and personality factors in relation to grief symptoms, such that extraversion is negatively related to grief symptoms over time in active women religious and positively related to grief symptoms in contemplative women religious over time. This was tested using multiple regression (see Table 5). The overall effect of lifestyle was significant. The mean scores for active and contemplative groups on time 2 grief and time 2
