2.3.6.2. Base personnel should use extreme caution in answering any queries relating to<br />

deaths <strong>of</strong> military personnel. An <strong>air</strong>craft (or o<strong>the</strong>r) accident will generate<br />

numerousquestions from concerned civilians and worried relatives <strong>of</strong> <strong>Air</strong> <strong>Force</strong> members<br />

believed to be involved in <strong>the</strong> accident. All inquires should be directed to <strong>the</strong> 27<br />

SOW/PA <strong>of</strong>fice.<br />

2.3.6.3. SOFSS will ensure members appointed to <strong>the</strong> base S&R team have at least oneyear<br />

retention on station. They may not be assigned to ano<strong>the</strong>r disaster response team<br />

and must have mental and physical fortitude necessary to handle this sensitive duty.<br />

2.3.6.4. Squadron <strong>commander</strong>s, upon request <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> MO, will recommend a<br />

commissioned <strong>of</strong>ficer to <strong>the</strong> 27 SOMSG/CC for appointment as SCO. Also, an escort <strong>of</strong><br />

equal rank or higher or appointed <strong>by</strong> <strong>the</strong> family will be required.<br />

2.3.6.5. Squadron <strong>commander</strong>s will immediately recommend an <strong>Air</strong> <strong>Force</strong> member <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> required rank to <strong>the</strong> 27 SOMSG/CC for appointment as a FLO upon request <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

MO.<br />

2.4. Identification Roles and Responsibilities.<br />

2.4.1. The Mortuary Officer will:<br />

2.4.1.1. Ensure <strong>the</strong> NMOMI processes remains for individual identification when<br />

AFSVA/SVOM is not required to respond.<br />

2.4.1.2. Request identification assistance from HQ AFSVA/SVOM when identification<br />

cannot be established.<br />

2.4.2. New Mexico Office <strong>of</strong> Medical Investigator (NMOMI) or AFME (AFIP/OAFME<br />

for all mishaps) will serve as <strong>the</strong> examining <strong>of</strong>ficial and will examine and process <strong>the</strong><br />

remains for identification.<br />

2.5. Preparation <strong>of</strong> Remains for an On-Base Mass Incident:<br />

2.5.1. AFMAO will be <strong>the</strong> lead preparation team for remains.<br />

2.6. Preparation <strong>of</strong> Remains for an Off-Base Mass Incident:<br />

2.6.1. AFMAO will still be <strong>the</strong> lead preparation team unless local jurisdiction refuses to<br />

relinquish authority to <strong>the</strong> U.S. <strong>Air</strong> <strong>Force</strong>. However, AFMAO will still be contacted and<br />

involved.
