(2) When <strong>the</strong> flag is used to drape a closed casket (Non-Viewable Remains), it should be<br />

placed so that <strong>the</strong> union (blue field) is at <strong>the</strong> head and over <strong>the</strong> left shoulder <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

deceased.<br />

j. As <strong>the</strong> escort, and unless o<strong>the</strong>rwise instructed <strong>by</strong> <strong>the</strong> PADD, you are allowed to attend <strong>the</strong><br />

funeral service.<br />

k. If <strong>the</strong> NOK has expressed a desire for military honors, this <strong>of</strong>fice will request <strong>the</strong><br />

Commander <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> nearest base to your final destination to furnish necessary personnel.<br />

5. DEBRIEFING. Upon return to station, report to <strong>the</strong> Base Mortuary Officer within two days <strong>of</strong><br />

your return for debriefing. At this time provide AF Form 1947, Escort Report. The report<br />

should identify any discrepancies, deviation <strong>of</strong> schedule, etc., that occurred on your mission.<br />

6. GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS<br />

a. You will have a smart, well-groomed appearance and maintain sobriety at all times.<br />

b. Secure tickets and Special Orders.<br />

c. Personally check to see that <strong>the</strong> remains you are escorting are placed aboard common<br />

carrier.<br />

d. Board common carrier being used and occupy seat after remains are placed on board.<br />

e. Personally accompany remains if transferred en route. Stay with <strong>the</strong> remains until <strong>the</strong>y are<br />

placed on <strong>the</strong> proper common carrier being used. DO NOT PAY ANY<br />

TRANSPORTATION COSTS OUT OF YOUR OWN POCKET, as <strong>the</strong>y are paid <strong>by</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Government upon receipt <strong>of</strong> a valid claim for same.<br />

f. If for any reason a deviation in schedule occurs en route, record <strong>the</strong> new itinerary and make<br />

two (2) telephone calls. One to Mortuary Officer (575-218-2791 or 575-904-9099), and one<br />

to <strong>the</strong> receiving funeral director, (Phone number is on <strong>the</strong> DD Form 1375). Give remains<br />

name, where <strong>the</strong> delay occurred, reason for delay, and new arriving schedule.<br />

g. Offer your services, through <strong>the</strong> receiving funeral director, to PADD and assist <strong>the</strong>m if<br />

<strong>the</strong>y desire.<br />

h. Be sympa<strong>the</strong>tic and understanding in dealing with relatives, and in conversation do not<br />

divulge information which should be safeguarded. Remember, <strong>the</strong> deceased is <strong>the</strong> most<br />

important person in <strong>the</strong> world to <strong>the</strong>ir surviving loved ones.
