Conducts <strong>and</strong> coordinates naval scientific research programs contributing to undersea warfare advancement.<br />

Maintains liaison with Naval Establishment <strong>and</strong> other agencies to coordinate <strong>and</strong> direct prosubmarine <strong>and</strong><br />

antisubmarine phases of undersea warfare program in accordance with established policy. Promotes basic research<br />

in such fields as applied physics, meteorology, electronics, machinery design, <strong>and</strong> noise reduction as applied to<br />

undersea warfare equipment <strong>and</strong> techniques. Examines new data resulting from basic research to determine use in<br />

undersea warfare program.<br />
