REVIEW OF LITERATURE<br />
2.1 The DMI has been engaged in conducting agricultural marketing surveys since its inception in the<br />
year 1935. The commodity survey reports brought forth background <strong>of</strong> commodity marketing, the<br />
problems <strong>and</strong> remedial measures required to overcome the same. These reports provided<br />
information on marketable surplus ratios, which were utilised by the Department <strong>of</strong> Statistics,<br />
Ministry <strong>of</strong> Planning, in framing estimates <strong>of</strong> ‘Net National Product’ <strong>and</strong> by Department <strong>of</strong><br />
Industrial Policy & Promotion for assigning weights to different agricultural commodities in<br />
compilation <strong>of</strong> “All India index numbers <strong>of</strong> wholesale prices”. The marketable surplus ratios in<br />
respect <strong>of</strong> foodgrains <strong>and</strong> sources are indicated below:<br />
