In transport at farm level, it is observed that the losses of jowar in transport from field to threshing floor amounted to 72.10 thousand tonnes or 0.68 percent of total production by various modes of transport used (Annexures XXXIV). 7.1.5 In transport from threshing floor to farm storage the total loss of jowar was 21.94 thousand tonnes (Annexure XXXV) or 0.21 percent. 7.1.6 The total losses of jowar in transport from field to farm storage amounted to 94.04 thousand tonnes (Annexure XXXVII) or 0.88 percent. 7.1.7 During the study of losses of jowar in storage, the startling fact coming to fore was that nearly 76.62 percent of the storage at the farm household continued to be in kutcha storage and 23.38 percent storage was pucca. The total quantity stored in kutcha godown at farm level was 4988.99 thousand tonnes and in pucca storage, 1522.35 thousand tonnes (Annexure XXXIX). 7.1.8 The total quantity of jowar lost in storage was estimated at 35.83 thousand tonnes. (Annexure XXXVIII) which was 0.34 percent of total production. The losses in storage were attributable to driage, rodents, infestation, handling, etc. 7.1.10 The total post harvest losses of jowar at producers level were estimated at 234.20 thousand tonnes or 2.20% of production. It is to be noted here that the period of storage and quantity stored is small. Therefore, the storage losses at producer’s level appeared 2.20 percent. However, there is a scope to further curtail these losses at farm level by scientific storage practices.
