Some pigments darken, as seen with Vermilli<strong>on</strong> (the red form of mercuric sul-<br />

fide) in Figure 4.15. In the unexposed sample, Vermilli<strong>on</strong>’s characteristic red ap-<br />

pearance is dictated by the high reflectance in the l<strong>on</strong>g-wavelength range of the<br />

visible spectrum. As the sample is exposed to an Atlas xen<strong>on</strong> arc Fade-Ometer, <strong>on</strong>e<br />

readily notices that the reflectance maxima in the l<strong>on</strong>g wavelength regi<strong>on</strong> decreases<br />

with age due to the darkening.<br />
