depositi<strong>on</strong> will be imperfect. Yet, substitute a s<strong>and</strong>blasted sheet of glass <strong>and</strong> the<br />

problem is alleviated, as the color will take to the surface more readily.<br />

Proper supports should age gracefully <strong>and</strong> be sufficiently able to hold a wide<br />

variety of materials. Also, they need to be able to withst<strong>and</strong> the effects of at-<br />

mospheric changes. For instance, under reas<strong>on</strong>able variable c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s of relative<br />

humidity <strong>and</strong> temperature, the support should exp<strong>and</strong>, c<strong>on</strong>tract or warp as little<br />

as possible to preserve the integrity of the overlying paint film. A support can be<br />

of a flexible material, such as cloth, or of a rigid <strong>on</strong>e, such as wood panel (or sheets<br />

of glass or metal). Mas<strong>on</strong>ry (such as walls or ceilings of buildings) has also served<br />

as historical supports for traditi<strong>on</strong>al artists.<br />

The term canvas is used in painting to describe any fabric that is used as a<br />

support. Cott<strong>on</strong> duck <strong>and</strong> linen are two distinct fabrics made from two different<br />

plant fibers. Cott<strong>on</strong> duck is a white fabric made from cott<strong>on</strong> fibers. It is an<br />

inexpensive, widely available, <strong>and</strong> a popular support for painting. Linen is a light-<br />

brown fabric made from the fibers of the flax plant, which is the same plant from<br />
