56. HERNANDIACEAE (Hernandia Family)<br />

Trees, shrubs, or woody vines, with alternate, entire, simple or 3-foliolate,<br />

exstipulate leaves. Inflorescence cymose or paniculate, axillary or terminal,<br />

flowers regular, perfect, or through abortion monoecious, the perianthsegments<br />

3 to 10, valvate, in two series, or the corolla wanting. Stamens<br />

few, inserted in a single row, the filaments with glands or staminodes at<br />

their base; anthers introrse, 2-celled, opening by recurved valves. Ovary<br />

inferior, 1-celled, with a single pendulous ovule. Fruit various, inde-<br />

hiscent, sometimes winged.<br />

Genera 4, species 27, in all tropical countries, 3 genera and 4 species in<br />

the Philippines.<br />

1. ILLIGERA Blume<br />

Climbing shrubs with alternate, 3-foliolate leaves, the leaflets entire.<br />

Inflorescence axillary, elongated, lax, cymose. Flowers 5-merous, brac-<br />

teolate, the calyx tube shortly constricted above the ovary, the limb 5-lobed.<br />

Petals 5, valvate, oblong, alternate with the calyx-lobes and about as long.<br />

Stamens 5, epigynous, the filaments with a pair <strong>of</strong> staminodes on each side<br />

near the base. Ovary 1-celled, inferior, 1-ovuled; style simple, filiform;<br />

stigma dilated. Fruit indehiscent, v^dth 2 broad lateral wings, and frequently<br />

with two additional keels or narrow wings. (In honor <strong>of</strong> J. K. W.<br />

IHiger, a German naturalist.)<br />

Species 13, 1 in Africa, the remaining 12 India to southern China and<br />

Formosa southward to the Malay Peninsula and Archipelago, 2 in the<br />

Philippines.<br />

1. I. luzonensis (Presl) Merr. (/. meyeniana Kth.).<br />

A vine reaching a height <strong>of</strong> 4 to 5 m, nearly glabrous except the somewhat<br />

pubescent younger parts and infloi-escence. Leaflets broadly ovate,<br />

"somewhat acuminate, base rounded or slightly cordate, 5 to 10 cm long.<br />

Cymes axillary, lax, up to 20 cm in length. Flowers pinkish to purplish-<br />

red, 8 to 10 mm long. Fruits somewhat 4-angled, including the lateral<br />

wings 2 to 3 cm long, 4 to 5 cm wide, the wings rather thin, rounded, the<br />

two additional keels or narrow wings between the broad ones 5 mm wide<br />

or less.<br />

In thickets, Masambong to Diliman, fl. Sept.-Oct. ; widely distributed<br />

in the Philippines. Formosa.<br />

57. PAPAVERACEAE (Poppy Family)<br />

Annual herbs with yellow juice. Leaves alternate, sessile, sinuate-lobed,<br />

spiny. Flowers large, yellow, perfect, regular. Sepals 2 or 3. Petals 4<br />

to 6. Stamens indefinite. Ovary 1-celled; style short; stigma 4- to 7-lobed;<br />

ovules very many on 4 to 7 parietal placentas. Capsule dehiscing at the<br />

top by short valves; seeds many.<br />

Genera 30, species about 300. Represented in the Philippines by a<br />

single introduced genus and species.<br />

1. ARGEMONE Linnaeus<br />

Characters <strong>of</strong> the Family as given above. (From a Greek name signifyiag<br />

a desease <strong>of</strong> the eye, for which the juice <strong>of</strong> a plant so called was<br />

considered to be a remedy.)<br />

Species 6 in tropical America, 1 now found in many other countries.
