1. RHYNCHOGLOSSUM Blume<br />

Succulent herbs, slightly pubescent or nearly glabrous. Leaves alternate,<br />

obliquely elliptic, thin, base verj- unequal-sided, one side broadly rounded<br />

or cordate, the other acute, entire or slightly sinuate. Racemes elongated,<br />

slender, many-flowered. Calyx ovoid or campanulate, 5-lobed. Corolla<br />

blue, the tube cylindric, contracted at the mouth, the limb 2-lipped, the<br />

upper lip short, bifid, the lower longer, 3-lobed. Stamens 2, perfect, included;<br />

anthers connivent. Ovary ovoid- Capsule included in the calyx,<br />

ellipsoid, membranaceous, loculicidally 2-valved; seeds small, numerous.<br />

(Greek "beak"' and "throat," from the small upper lip <strong>of</strong> the corolla.)<br />

Species 3 or 4, India to Malaya, 2 or 3 in the Philippines.<br />

1. R. obliquum Blume.<br />

An erect, branched, annual, slightly pubescent or nearly glabrous,<br />

succulent herb 10 to 60 cm high. Leaves membranaceous, 4 to 15 cm long,<br />

entire, acute or acuminate, the round side <strong>of</strong> the base extending much<br />

farther along the petiole than the acute side. Racemes slender, erect, 5<br />

to 15 long. Flowers few to many, rather distant. Cah-x green, about<br />

5 mm long. Corolla blue, the tube slightly incurved, about 1 cm long.<br />

On wet cliffs opposite Fort McKinley, rare, fl. Sept.-Dec.; widely distributed<br />

in the Philippines in damp ravines, etc. Malaya, a variety in<br />

India.<br />

128. LEXTIBULARIACEAE (Bladderwort Family)<br />

Annual, terrestrial or aquatic herbs, the leaves whorled, persistent,<br />

pinnately compound, divided into numerous filiform segments, the segments<br />

usually bearing small bladders at their bases, or in the terrestrial species<br />

alternate and disappearing before flowering. Scapes erect, the flowers<br />

racemosely arranged, yellow, purplish, or nearly white. Flowers perfect,<br />

irregular, few. Calyx divided into 2 distinct or nearly distinct sepals, <strong>of</strong>ten<br />

enlarged in fruit. Corolla 2-lipped, base spurred, the upper lip entire or<br />

2-lobed, the lower larger, <strong>of</strong>ten 3- to 5-lobed. Stamens 2, inserted on the<br />

base <strong>of</strong> the corolla. Ovary superior, 1-celled, many-ovuled. Fruit a small<br />

2- or 4-valved capsule.<br />

Genera 5, species about 250, in all parts <strong>of</strong> the world, a single genus<br />

with about 10 species in the Philippines.<br />

Characters <strong>of</strong> the Family as given above. (From the Latin "little<br />

bladder" in allusion to the bladder-bearing leaves.)<br />
