Erect glabrous trees with very stout branches. Leaves scattered, elon-<br />

gated. Flowers large, in terminal cymes. Calyx small, 5-lobed, the lobes<br />

obtuse. Corolla funnel-shaped, the lobes strongly overlapping. Stamens<br />

inserted near the base <strong>of</strong> the tube; anthers obtuse, rounded at the base,<br />

free from the stigma. Carpels 2, distinct; ovules many. Fruit a linearoblong<br />

or ellipsoid follicle. (In honor <strong>of</strong> C. Plumier, an early French<br />

botanist.)<br />

Species about 40, all <strong>of</strong> tropical America, the following now cultivated in<br />

tropical countries.<br />

A tree 3 to 7 m high, the branchlets swollen, leafy at their tips. Leaves<br />

oblong, narrowed at both ends, 20 to 40 cm long. Flowers numerous, very<br />

fragrant, white and pinkish outside, yellow within, 5 to 6 cm long. (Fl.<br />

Filip. pi. 39.)<br />

Commonly cultivated for the fragrant flowers, but not spontaneous, fl.<br />

all the year; cultivated in all tropical countries, a native <strong>of</strong> tropical America.<br />

2. CERBERA Linnaeus<br />

Glabrous trees with alternate leaves. Flowers rather large, in terminal<br />

cymes. Calyx 5-parted, not glandular. Corolla funnel-shaped or salvershaped,<br />

the tube slender, the lobes broad. Stamens included; anthers<br />

lanceolate, cells rounded at the base, free from the stigma. Disk none.<br />

Carpels 2, distinct; ovules 4 in each carpel. Fruit large, ovoid or ellipsoid,<br />

the pericarp thick, fibrous and woody. (After the dog Cerberus <strong>of</strong> Greek<br />

mythology.)<br />

A small genus <strong>of</strong> 5 or 6 species in the littoral districts from Madagascar<br />

to India and Malaya, at least 2 in the Philippines.<br />

1. C. odollam Gaertn. Barabay, Lipata (Tag.).<br />

A tree 4 to 6 m high, the branches stout. Leaves lanceolate to oblonglanceolate,<br />

narrowed at both ends, acuminate, about 20 cm long, shining,<br />

the nerves slender. Cymes <strong>of</strong>ten as long as the leaves, peduncled. Calyxtube<br />

short, the lobes spreading, pale-green, lanceolate, acuminate, about<br />

2 cm long. Corolla-tube slender, greenish-white, enlarged above, about 4<br />

cm long, the 5-lobed limb white with a purple center, spreading, about 5 cm<br />

in diameter. Fruit smooth, ellipsoid or ovoid, about 6 cm long.<br />

Occasional along the Pasay beach, fl. all the year; throughout the Phil-<br />

ippines along the seashore. India to China, Malaya, Australia, and Pol-<br />

ynesia.<br />

3. THEVETIA Linnaeus<br />

Shrubs with elongated branches and numerous, entire, narrow, alternate<br />

leaves. Flowers large, yellow, solitary or in few-flowered cymes. Calyxlobes<br />

5, lanceolate, somewhat spreading. Corolla funnel-shaped, the lower<br />
