widely distributed in Luzon. Chittagong, Tenasserim, Burma, China, and<br />

Java.<br />

6. LIMNOPHILA R. Brown<br />

Glabrous or pubescent, aromatic, gland-dotted, usually marsh or water<br />

plants. Leaves opposite or whorled, toothed, cut, or in submerged plants<br />

multifid. Flowers sessile or pedicelled, solitary, racemed, or spicate,<br />

bracteoles present or absent. Sepals narrow, subequal, or the posterior<br />

one larger. Corolla-tube cylindric, the upper lip entire or 2-fid, the lower<br />

spreading, 3-fid. Stamens 4, in 2 pairs, included. Capsule ovoid or oblong,<br />

dehiscent. (Greek "swamp" and "to love," from the habitat <strong>of</strong> most<br />

species.)<br />

Species about 25, Africa, Asia, through Malaya to Australia and Poly-<br />

nesia, about 8 in the Philippines.<br />

Leaves sessile, base broad, somewhat clasping the stem; flowers sessile.<br />

An erect or spreading, simple or ultimately much branched, more or<br />

less pubescent, aromatic herb, the stems up to 50 cm in length, usually<br />

much shorter. Leaves opposite, lanceolate to oblong-lanceolate, sessile,<br />

serrulate, acute or obtuse, 1.5 to 3 cm long. Flowers axillary, solitary,<br />

shortly pedicelled. Calyx 5 to 6 mm long, somewhat pubescent, the tube<br />

green, the lobes lanceolate, acuminate, purple. Corolla purple, about 9 m<br />

long. Capsule ovoid, 3 to 4 mm long.<br />

In open wet grass lands, La Loma, Caloocan, etc., fl. Dec.-Feb. ; <strong>of</strong> local<br />

occurrence in the Philippines. Endemic.<br />

2. L. fragrans (Forst. f.) Seem. (L. serrata Gaudich.).<br />

A procumbent or ascending, usually simple, aromatic, glabrous or nearly<br />

glabrous plant, usually less than 20 cm high. Leaves oblong, serrate, 1<br />

to 2 cm long, sessile, the base broad and somewhat clasping the stems.<br />

Flowers axillary, sessile, solitary. Calyx glabrous, the segments lanceo-<br />

late, acuminate. Corolla very pale lilac, about as long as the calyx.<br />

In low wet places, old rice paddies, etc., San Lazaro, Guadalupe, etc.,<br />

fl. Dec-Jan.; <strong>of</strong> local occurrence in the Philippines. Malay Archipelago<br />

to Polynesia.<br />

7. MAZUS Loureiro<br />

Small herbs, the leaves below opposite or rosulate, above opposite or<br />

alternate. Flowers in terminal racemes, the bracteoles small. Calsrx<br />

campanulate, 5-fid. Corolla-tube short, the upper lip erect, 2-fid, the<br />

lower much larger, spreading, 3-fid, the throat with a 2-lobed palate.<br />

Stamens 4, in 2 pairs. Capsule included in the calyx, globose, loculicidal.<br />

Seeds minute, numerous. (Greek "nipple" from the papillae at the corolla<br />

throat.)<br />

Species about 12, mostly Asiatic, 1 in Australia, the following extending<br />

to the Philippines.<br />

1. IVl. japonicus (Thunb.) O. Kuntze. (M. rugosua hour.)<br />

An annual, erect, glabrous or somewhat hairy herb 6 to 20 cm high.<br />
