to 20 cm long. Flowers bright-red, the corolla about 2.5 cm long.<br />

Cultivated only, fl. Nov.-March. A native <strong>of</strong> tropical America, <strong>of</strong> com-<br />

paratively recent introduction here.<br />

71. BURSERACEAE (Canarium or Pili Family)<br />

Trees or shrubs, resiniferous, with alternate or opposite, odd-pinnate<br />

leaves. Inflorescence axillary or terminal, paniculate or racemose. Flow-<br />

ers small, regular, perfect or polygamous. Calyx 3- to 6-lobed. Petals<br />

3 to 6, free, rarely connate, imbricate or valvate. Disk annular or cupshaped.<br />

Stamens 3 to 12, equal or unequal, inserted at the base <strong>of</strong>, or on<br />

the margin <strong>of</strong> the disk, free, or sometimes united at the base. Ovary free,<br />

1- to 5-celled; ovules 1 or 2 in each cell; style simple. Fruit drupe-like,<br />

indehiscent, the pulp usually thin, the endocarp bony, <strong>of</strong>ten 3-angled,<br />

1- to 3-seeded.<br />

Genera 19, species about 400 in the tropics <strong>of</strong> both hemispheres, 4 genera<br />

and about 40 species in the Philippines.<br />

1. CANARIUM Linnaeus<br />

Usually large trees with fragrant sticky resin. Leaves alternate, odd-<br />

pinnate. Flowers small, in terminal or axillary, <strong>of</strong>ten narrow panicles,<br />

perfect or polygamous. Calyx short, 3-lobed. Petals 3, free. Stamens 6,<br />

inserted on the margin <strong>of</strong> the disk, or outside <strong>of</strong> it. Ovary 2- or 3-celled;<br />

ovules 2 in each cell. Drupe ovoid to ellipsoid, <strong>of</strong>ten distinctly 3-angled,<br />

the pulp thin, the stone 1- to 3-celled, 1- to 3-seeded. (From the Malay<br />

name <strong>of</strong> one species.)<br />

Species about 100 in tropical Asia and Malaya, about 35 in the Philip-<br />

pines.<br />

1. C. villosum (Blume) F.-Vill. Pagsairtguin (Tag.).<br />

A tree reaching a height <strong>of</strong> 20 m, the young branches, leaves, and inflorescence<br />

more or less covered with s<strong>of</strong>t brown hairs, in age becoming<br />

nearly glabrous. Leaves 20 to 50 cm long; leaflets 7 to 15, ovate to oblong-<br />

ovate, 6 to 18 cm long, entire, acuminate, base rounded or subcordate,<br />

oblique, the nerves prominent beneath. Inflorescence axillary, paniculate,<br />

10 to 30 cm long, the primary branches distant, very short, or sometimes<br />

none. Flowers pubescent, greenish-white, 4 to 5 mm long, sessile, fasci-<br />

culate. Fruit ovoid to ellipsoid, terete, not 3-angled, about 1 cm long. (Fl.<br />

Filip. pi. 343, C. pimela.)<br />

In thickets, Masambong, occasional, fl. Mar.-Apr.; widely distributed in<br />

the Philippines. Endemic.<br />

72. MELIACEAE (Santol Family)<br />

Trees or shrubs, rarely small undershrubs or herbs, with alternate,<br />

usually pinnate, sometimes 2- or 3-pinnate, rarely simple leaves. Flowers<br />

perfect or polygamo-dioecious, regular, in axillary or terminal panicles,<br />

racemes, spikes, or fascicles. Calyx 3- to 6-lobed, rarely entire or <strong>of</strong> free<br />

sepals. Petals 3 to 6, free or connate at the base, sometimes cohering with<br />

the staminal tube below. Anthers 4 to 12, sessile, usually borne inside <strong>of</strong>,<br />

or on the margin <strong>of</strong> a staminal tube. Disk tubular, annular, or none.<br />
