CONVOLVULACEAE 383<br />

at the base, urn-shaped above, the limb shortly 5-lobed. Stamens 5,<br />

included, the filaments dilated at their concave bases and arched over the<br />

ovary; disk large, culpular. Ovary 2-celled; ovules 4; style short. Fruit<br />

a small, 4-valved capsule. (Greek "scale" and "filament," in reference to<br />

the scale at the base <strong>of</strong> each stamen.)<br />

Species 3 in tropical Asia and Africa, 1 in the Philippines.<br />

1. L. binectariferum (Wall.) O. Ktze. (L. flavescens Bl.).<br />

An herbaceous twining vine, the stems villous. Leaves ovate, 5 to 12 cm<br />

long, densely tomentose on both surfaces, base deeply cordate, apex acute or<br />

acuminate, margins entire or somewhat 3-lobed. Cymes axillary, dense,<br />

globose, pubescent, 3 to 4 cm in diameter, few- to many-flowered. Sepals<br />

strigose, acuminate. Corolla pale-yellow, slightly hairy outside, urn-shaped,<br />

1 to 1.5 cm long. Capsule ovoid, glabrous, 2-celled, about 5 mm long.<br />

In dry thickets near Fort McKinley, Balicbalic, etc., fl. Jan.; widely<br />

distributed in the Philippines. Assam to Java and Borneo.<br />

3. QUAMOCLIT Moench<br />

Annual, twining, glabrous, slender, herbaceous vines. Leaves ovate, cordate,<br />

angled, lobed or pinnately divided. Flowers red, in few-flowered<br />

axillary, lax cymes. Sepals small, their apices <strong>of</strong>ten somewhat awned.<br />

Corolla salver-shaped, regular or nearly so, the tube long, the limb spreading,<br />

subentire or very slightly lobed. Stamens 5, exserted, filaments unequal.<br />

Ovary 4-celled, 4-ovuled. Fruit a 4-celled capsule. (Apparently<br />

from an old Mexican name.)<br />

Species 7 in tropical America, 2 now widely distributed in the tropics <strong>of</strong><br />

the East.<br />

Leaves pinnately divided into numerous, linear segments 2. Q. pinnata<br />

1. Q. PHOENICEA (Roxb.) Choisy (Q. coccinea Auct.). Pula (Tag. "red").<br />

A scandent, twining, slender vine reaching a length <strong>of</strong> several meters.<br />

Leaves ovate, broadly cordate, acute or acuminate, margins subentire or<br />

angled, or broadly 3- to 5-lobed, 6 to 12 cm long. Cymes axillary, long-<br />

peduncled, few-flowered, the peduncles up to 15 cm long. Flowers erect,<br />

red. Sepals 5, green, about 6 mm long, obtuse, slenderly spurred from<br />

the apex. Corolla deep-red, the tube slender, slightly enlarged upward,<br />

2.5 cm long, the limb spreading, about 2 cm in diameter. Capsule subglobose<br />

or ovoid, about 6 mm in diameter. (Fl. Filip. pi. 17.)<br />

In thickets, San Juan del Monte, fl. Nov.-Apr. ; <strong>of</strong> local occurence in<br />

the Philippines, but frequently very abundant, thoroughly naturalized. A<br />

native <strong>of</strong> tropical America now found wild and cultivated in many other<br />

tropical countries.<br />

2. Q. PINNATA (Lam.) Bojer {Q. vulgaris Choisy). Cabello del angel<br />

(Sp.-Fil.) ; Cypress Vine.<br />

A slender, twining, glabrous vine reaching a height <strong>of</strong> 4 m or more.<br />

Leaves ovate in outline, 4 to 7 cm long, pinnately divided into numerous,<br />

linear, distant segments. Cymes axillary, few-flowered, the peduncles 4 to<br />

9 cm long. Flowers erect. Sepals green, about 5 mm long, apiculate,<br />

elliptic. Corolla deep-red, salver-shaped, the tube about 2 cm long, slightly<br />

enlarged upward, the limb spreading, 1.5 to 2 cm in diameter, distinctly<br />

5-lobed. Capsule ovoid, 7 to 8 mm long. (Fl. Filip. pi. S3.)
