The high-quality maritime timekeepers can today be found in the salons of numerous luxury yachts whose prices range in the millions. The newest model of this line developed with a great deal of imagination is the Tempus Mobile, outfitted with a function unique in the world – one that has proven itself particularly on sailing yachts. A sailboat only remains horizontal in the water if it is running before the wind, when the wind and the direction of travel coincide. All other courses, especially when sailing head to wind, will see the boat leaning to the side that is positioned away from the wind. The 43-centimeter-high Tempus Mobile (Latin for »mobile time«), whose case is held in a gimbaled ball bearing ring held by three stainless steel columns, displays the heeling of a sailboat in angular degrees. The tip of its funnel-shaped case swings between the rings along a base of polished granite providing a home for the scale normally delivered with divisions ranging between 0 and 15 degrees. Sporty sailors can request a scale providing measurements between 0 and 21 degrees. The permanent world time display is very practical on long sailing voyages along the lines of latitude: its display ring on the lower edge of the case cylinder makes one revolution every 24 hours. The time is indicated on the unusual clock by a regulator display (central sweep minute hand, subsidiary dials for hours and seconds), the previously usual type of display for observatory clocks and marine chronometers. Additionally, the Tempus Mobile is outfitted with a power reserve and 24-hour display. The latter is separately correctible and can be set to show either a second time zone or a day/night indication. Its clock is outfitted with the manufacture movement of the Nautis marine clock, which brings a good two weeks’ power reserve with it. A cutaway in the subdial for seconds allows a view of the balance of the Swiss échappement, a complete subgroup screw-mounted to the top of the movement that contains the escapement and the balance. 80 81
Tempus Mobile Atlantis A variation of this concept represents the model Tempus Mobile Atlantis as module. Here, a twice as big heeling indication shows a declination of the boat up to 30 degrees. The scale, all rings and the curved pillars are milled and turned from solid brass and ensuingly handfinished and nickel plated to a gloss. The clock, mounted in a gimbal suspension can be fitted and integrated into various interiours of yachts and homes. A further option is the equipment with LED illumination. The base, a six-centimeter-thick plate of granite leveled by six regulating screws, contains the rechargeable battery that allows the clock’s total of 24 LED lamps to bathe it in a secretive light. The gimbaled suspension of the precision world time clock comprises four high-polished, curved columns milled from carbon fiber and aluminum.
