Black varnish with walnut root wood Semi Secunda 65 Dimensions: Height 65 cm Width 26 cm Depth 9 cm Black varnish Semi Secunda 65 – Erwin Sattler’s Smallest Precision Pendulum Clock The Semi Secunda 65 occupies a special position in the Erwin Sattler manufactory’s precision clock collection. This model is not only the company’s smallest precision pendulum clock, it is also the model that can find good space for itself even under cramped circumstances. Its so-called upside-down escapement is a special element of Sattler Caliber 2006. Because the pendulum’s suspension point is located between the movement’s two base plates, the case has been kept very flat. The generously skeletonized dial makes not only this construction visible, but also another special element of the movement: its Graham escapement including agate pallets and a 60-tooth escape wheel. This means that the Semi Secunda actually has a half-second pendulum. The pendulum’s laws of physics dictate that the length of the pendulum decreases by a quarter in relation to the period of the oscillation, and in fact, a half-second pendulum is only one-quarter the length of a one-second pendulum. The Semi Secunda’s pendulum thus oscillates twice per second, making an escape wheel with sixty teeth necessary. Thus, the second hand makes one complete revolution per minute. To improve the pendulum’s compensation of temperature change, the Semi Secunda is equipped with a doublecylinder compensation pendulum according to Prof. Ludwig Strasser. Here, the compensation pipe is almost uncovered in comparison with other pendulums, and thus almost completely surrounded by air. The movement is also outfitted corresponding to Erwin Sattler’s technical level. Gold-plated, milled gear wheels turn on hardened pinions in a total of twelve stainless steel ball bearings between nickel-plated brass plates four millimeters strong. Another two jewels are in charge of friction-free movement. Interplaying with the movement’s steel cable and spring barrel, the so-called fusee ensures constant force for thirty days of power reserve. On the silver-plated dial, the power reserve is displayed along with the time and date. The case, as always at Erwin Sattler, illustrates the highest quality of varnish. The elegant locking mechanism for opening the front door deserves special mention. Available in black or a black-walnut combination, this »small« precision pendulum clock in no way needs to hide behind its more famous big sisters. 12 13

A combination of wood and metal inlays lends the case a contemporary appearance. The movement is outfitted with ten precision ball bearings and two jewel bearings. Gold-plated gear wheels drive the temperature-compensating 5/6-second invar pendulum. A cutaway in the silver-plated regulator dial allows a view of the Graham escapement with its agate pallets, and a barometer reliably compensates variation in air pressure on the elegant double-cylinder pendulum. The ball bearing tungsten weight located off to the side makes a power reserve of one month per winding interval possible. Thanks to high craftsmanship and the use of high-grade materials and and compensation elements, the Metallica 1735 achieves a rate deviation of about three to four seconds per month. 14 15
