ROTTERDAM
CITY OF
ARCHITECTURE
DARE TO BUILD
Directly after the end of WWII, Rotterdam started
reconstruction of the inner city that had been destroyed
during the bombardment on 14 May 1940. Rather than
copying the former cityscapes, the city introduced completely
new architectural styles. Top architects from the Netherlands
and abroad have been responsible for creating Rotterdam’s
modern, metropolitan image. Rotterdam is also home to
successful international architecture firms, including OMA,
the firm led by Rem Koolhaas, who is one of the world’s
most influential architects, and West 8 led by Adriaan Geuze,
specialising in ground-breaking landscape architecture.
The International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam (IABR),
a large public event on the themes of architecture, landscape
architecture and urban design, has been based in Rotterdam
for over ten years, and with good reason.
5TH IABR: MAKING CITY
The city is our future. By 2050, more than seven billion
of the nine billion people on earth will live in cities.
Such dramatic urbanisation poses a huge political,
social, economic and ecological challenge. Accordingly,
Making City is the main theme of the 5th IABR and the
title of the main exhibition at the Netherlands Architecture
Institute (NAI). New York, Paris, New Delhi, Sao Paulo:
35 projects will be presented from cities around the world,
showcasing innovative concepts and designs for the city
of the future. Besides exhibitions at various locations,
the 5th IABR includes intriguing debates, lectures,
conferences and publications.
