From Tintin to
Shakespeare
Do comic books and literature go
together? Of course they do, and certainly
in the movies.
Steven Spielberg has just made The
Adventures of Tintin. For more than half
a century, the intrepid journalist Tintin
(Kuifje to Dutch speakers) has fascinated
millions worldwide in Hergé’s masterfully
drawn comics. Spielberg used a technique
called Motion Capture to bring the
cartoon hero to life and, trust me, after a
few minutes you won’t see the difference
between animation and live action.
A different kind of hero, William
Shakespeare is a literary giant in the
western world — up to now, at least. In
the fi lm Anonymous, Roland Emmerich
(Godzilla and Independence Day) casts
doubt on the existence of Shakespeare.
According to Emmerich, Edward de Vere,
Earl of Oxford, penned the bard’s
masterpieces and was — if we are to
believe Emmerich — also very close to
Queen Elizabeth I of England, the Virgin
Queen… a bit too close perhaps?
In the movies, everything is possible!
