FIT TO GO
SWIM
KING
Olympian and former swimming
champ Michael Klim smashed
world records throughout his
12-year international career. Out
of retirement in February 2011,
the comeback king reveals how
he balances work, family and his
passion for the pool
WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO
BECOME A PRO SWIMMER?
When I watched the 1988 Olympic
Games and saw Duncan Armstrong
win gold!
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS
OF SWIMMING?
Swimming is a great form of
exercise as it develops your
muscular, cardiovascular and
overall endurance. Mentally, it’s
also a great release from everyday
routine. Swimming is very relaxing
— no mobile phone has yet been
invented that can ring in the pool!
WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN
TRAINING IN THE POOL AND AT
THE BEACH?
Training in the pool is very specifi c
and focused on quality, not quantity
of laps. At my old age of 34, making
sure that my body is well balanced
in terms of strength and power is
important. We focus on technique,
endurance, speed and general skill.
The benefi ts from training at the
beach are minimal in terms of form,
but mentally the benefi ts of being
EVENTS /// PROFILES /// FOOD /// DRINKS /// PLACES /// STYLE
outside are huge.
HOW DO YOU KEEP A STRONG
MIND AS WELL AS BODY?
Being passionate and enjoying
what you do keeps motivation
high, which makes it easy to have a
strong mind.
ANY TIPS FOR BALANCING WORK
AND FAMILY LIFE?
The key to juggling swimming,
spending time with my family and
directing my business Milk & Co is
planning and having good support
from family, friends, colleagues and
my coach. I’m learning to live in the
moment. If I’m with the kids, then
this is time with the kids — I leave
training and work behind.
BE BEACH SAFE
Swimming champ
Michael Klim
1. Swim between the lifeguards’ red and yellow fl ags.
2. Swim with a friend and never take your eyes off
your children when they’re in or near the water.
3. Don’t underestimate the ocean — use common sense!
4. Slip on a shirt, slop on sunscreen, slap on a hat.
5. Never drink alcohol and swim.
6. Learn to be a competent swimmer.
