ADRENALINE LEFT/RIGHT: Shiga Kogen is the largest ski resort in Japan; families should head to the friendly slopes of Myoko Kogen Matsumoto Castle is one of Japan’s premier historic castles in the city of Matsumoto in Nagano and is listed as a National Treasure of Japan. NOZAWA ONSEN Nozawa Onsen was founded around 924AD and is a pedestrian-favoured village fi lled with cobbled laneways and more than 50 private and public onsen. Wander down to the public cooking onsen and watch locals cook their rice in the thermal springs. Nozawa claims to be the “birthplace of skiing” in Japan, and has a ski museum to prove that the fi rst commercial leisure skiing was launched here in 1924. Expect a more than 1,000m vertical drop on the ski mountain that off ers almost 300ha of groomed runs, mogul runs, tree skiing and powder bowls, including one 8km-long run. There are a handful of intimate bars, cosy restaurants and excellent ryokans (traditional guesthouses) that have been in Japanese families for 12 generations. BEST FOR: Families and powder skiers looking for a traditional Japanese experience. DON’T MISS: The Dosojin Fire Festival is held on 15 January every year. Visitors and locals descend upon the village square to 058 witness a bizarre fi re ritual that involves beating drums, barrels of sake and a three-storey burning effi gy with men clinging to it. SHIGA KOGEN Twenty-one linked resorts make up Shiga Kogen, the largest ski resort in Japan. There’s something for everyone including groomed runs, moguls, terrain parks, powder skiing, tree skiing, monkeys, night skiing and Olympic runs. Seventy lifts provide access to this mammoth terrain, including a few old-world, egg-shaped gondolas. The resort features a series of “accommodation villages” linked by the lift system, but nightlife is quiet and minimal. If you’re looking for fun after dark, the Ichinose area is where you’ll fi nd it with a handful of restaurants and pubs. BEST FOR: Avid skiers and snowboarders who like to make the most of their snow days. NEARBY: You cannot miss the snow monkeys if you come to Shiga Kogen. They can be found at the Jigokudani hot springs, soaking their furry bodies in the warm waters surrounded by snow.
