take a trip out to the west coast it’s
a whole diff erent story.
The most popular beach is
Piha which has a truly cool beach
culture based around the surf
club. Eating fi sh and chips is the
perfect way to wrap up a day of
serious surf action.
GO GREEN IN THE CITY
Spend an afternoon relaxing in
one of the city’s beautiful parks. At
more than 125ha, Cornwall Park
is a favourite. Families come to
picnic under the giant Algerian
oaks and Puriri trees, sizzle
sausages on the free barbecues,
and relax into the balmy evenings.
Take a walk around this park and
you’ll come across grazing cattle
and sheep, a pretty tearoom and
a spectacular view across the city
from the top of One Tree Hill.
Closer to the centre of the city
is the Auckland Domain. The
oldest park in the city, it has more
than 75ha of parkland and bush
be enchanted by
Cornwall Park
For a little more effort, visit Fergs Kayaks
and paddle your way around the waterfront
with walking tracks. Follow the sculpture
trail, and visit the Auckland War Memorial
Museum and exotic fl owers in the hot
houses at the heritage Wintergarden.
TAKE TO THE WATER
From the centre of the city you can jump
on a ferry or sailing boat and be out on
Waitemata Harbour within minutes. Take
the 15-minute trip across to Devonport,
where you can while away the day
exploring the shops, climbing to the top of
North Head and exploring old navy tunnels.
Or, head to Waiheke Island for a day of
vineyards and lazing on beautiful beaches.
For a little more eff ort, visit Fergs Kayaks,
near Okahu Bay, and paddle your own way
around the waterfront. Or visit Auckland
Windsurfi ng in Point Chevalier — the good
winds and shallow waters here make this
an ideal place to try this fun sport.
ESCAPE THE HEAT
Once you’ve had your fi x of the great
outdoors, head to the Auckland Art Gallery
for a closer look at works by New Zealand’s
leading artists. Having just undergone a
