BRUNY ISLAND, TASMANIA
Bruny Island could be Australia’s perfect
family holiday retreat. Hire a cabin by
the beach and search the nearby rocks
for oysters and mussels. It evokes all the
fantasies we have of getting away from the
world, yet it’s just a 20-minute ferry ride
from Kettering (which in turn is only 40
minutes’ drive from Hobart). But when
you’re on Bruny Island, you’ll feel as if
you’ve left everything behind.
Much of Bruny Island is made up of
the South Bruny National Park, and its
coastline is equally wild — made up of
craggy headlands and sweeping cliff s — but
there’s also safe swimming beaches. You’ll
see plenty of wildlife about; the sea’s full
of fairy penguins, sea lions and fur seals.
Families can take eco boat-cruises (Bruny
Island Cruises) or check out the island’s
home-made fudge, chocolate and cheese…
and wine for the grown-ups at Australia’s
southern-most winery, Bruny Island Wines.
