Goes from Z to V<br />

PHILADELPHIA — When Denise Deery,<br />

Commercial Art graduate of the Art Institute<br />

of Philadelphia, began her search for employment,<br />

she started with the "Z" listings<br />

for local ad agencies. It didn't take her long<br />

to find work. One of the "V's"—VanSant Dugdale<br />

— hired her almost immediately. She's<br />

an art assistant for the agency, doing layout,<br />

design and mechanicals for clients such as<br />

Altair Airlines, Philadelphia National Bank,<br />

Slazenger sports equipment, and radio stations<br />

WIP and WMMR.<br />

"My Art Institute education was valuable<br />

because it was so practical," says Miss<br />

Deery, who did on-the-job training with a<br />

well-known Philadelphia agency while in<br />

school. When her training was completed,<br />

they offered her a full-time position, but she<br />

waited and is now happy with her choice of<br />

VanSant Dugdale. "There's real opportunity<br />

for growth here," she says.<br />

Noted Designers Judge Student Poster Competition<br />

ASPEN, Colo.—Four of the biggest names in<br />

the world of design — Saul Bass, Milton<br />

Glaser, Henry Wolf and Ivan Chermayeff.acted<br />

as judges for The Design Schools<br />

poster competition at this year's International<br />

Design Conference in Aspen. The conference<br />

is one of the most prestigious design<br />

events in the world, and this year's theme,<br />

"The Italian Idea," drew over 1,800 entries to<br />

the poster competition. From the 180 finalists,<br />

23 posters were selected for cash prizes<br />

and were featured in a special exhibit during<br />

the conference. They are now part of a traveling<br />

exhibit touring the nation. In addition to<br />

being an all-round learning experience, the<br />

contest demonstrated how students at the<br />

six autonomous Design Schools could work<br />

effectively toward a common goal.<br />

The New Technology, Servant or Master?<br />
