torShavn, Faroe Islands
Tradition seeps out of Torshavn, a gorgeous mix of brightly painted old houses,
historical treasures and spectacular wildlife. Named after Thor, the Norse god
of thunder, the city is actually the capital of the Faroe Islands, which lie scattered
in the Atlantic between Scotland and Iceland.
• Stroll along the harbour lined with traditional houses and see the 17th-century
fortress lighthouse. Have your binoculars handy - the area's a magnet for rare birds.
• Lose yourself in the streets of the old town, and take a look at the unfinished
Gothic-style St Magnus Cathedral
tromSo, Norway
The biggest city above the Arctic Circle, Tromso's been the starting point
for countless polar expeditions. Norwegians call it the Paris of the North,
and one thing's for sure - it's a city to fall in love with.
• Don't miss the iceberg-shaped Arctic Cathedral, which glistens in the haunting
glow of the ever-present Midnight Sun
• Call in at Tromso Museum, home to the world's largest exhibition on the
traditional Sami culture as well as some great examples of religious art.
viSby, Sweden
UNESCO-protected Visby is an amazingly well-preserved Medieval town on
the Swedish island of Gotland. Its cobbled streets are cocooned by chunky
stone walls that envelope timeworn churches, gardens filled with rose bushes,
and old-fashioned souvenir shops. Venture away from the city, meanwhile,
and sweeping farmland and lakes stretch as far as the eye can see.
• The best place to see Visby’s resident roses is in the city’s beautiful Botanical
Gardens. The gardens are also home to the ruins of a Romanesque church.
• Stora Torget – Visby’s market square – is perfect for people-watching. It’s packed
with restaurants and cafés with al fresco tables, so grab a chair and watch the locals
milling about in the shadow of the 13th-century St Catherine’s Church.
Zeebrugge, Belgium
Zeebrugge is your gateway to Bruges, a Belgian delight that couldn't be any
cuter if it tried. It's a perfectly preserved open-air museum, all cobbled streets,
canals and Medieval monuments, laced with the scent of the city's famous
chocolate. Trust us, if this place doesn't charm you, nothing will.
• Glide along the shimmering canals taking in sights like the Chapel of the
Holy Blood and the Church of Notre Dame
• Press your nose against chocolate shop windows stacked with Everest-like piles
of naughtiness, then give in to temptation and indulge your sweet tooth. Don't
fancy chocolate? Then why not save your money for the famous Bruges lace?
• Get to know the stories of the soldiers who died on the Ypres battlefields
during the First World War. The award-winning Flanders Fields Museum is full
of poignant reminders of the true cost of conflict.
