CYPRuS
ReSoRT INFoRMATIoN
People have been falling for Cyprus since ancient times. And, thanks
to the island’s sandy beaches and full spectrum of holiday resorts,
the love affair looks set to continue for years to come.
It’s said Mark Antony presented this island to Cleopatra as a token of his affection.
Take one look at the place and you’ll see why. Cyprus’ 800-kilometre-long coastline
boasts some of the best beaches in the Mediterranean. Inland, meanwhile, sleepy villages
dot pine-cloaked hills, and Byzantine monasteries lay hidden in the Troodos Mountains.
When it comes to deciding where to stay, families tend to flock to the calm waters of
Nissi Beach in the east, while the party crowd head up the road to neon-lit Ayia Napa.
At the other end of the scale, Protaras’ vine-wrapped tavernas and secluded inlets
call out to couples.
Over on the west coast, Paphos and Limassol are the big-hitters. The former is
the ancient capital of Cyprus, and signs of days gone by are everywhere you look.
Crumbling forts, faded temples, timeworn churches – you name it, Paphos has got it.
Plus, the town is brimming with bars and restaurants.
As for Limassol, the characterful old town is the showpiece here – pick a path around
the winding lanes and stop for a plate of moussaka at one of the backstreet tavernas.
