SoaK up the sea views from alanya Castle,<br />

a 2nd -century BC fortress that towers over the<br />

whole town. it’s huge, and it’s surrounded by<br />

six-kilometre-long walls which snake down the hill<br />

to alanya’s old quarter. While you’re here, take a look<br />

at hurling rock – it’s where condemned prisoners<br />

were thrown to their deaths into the sea.<br />

Alexandria - EGYPT<br />

STeP back in time with a visit to the national<br />

museum in Cairo. it houses the biggest and most<br />

important collection of egyptian artefacts in the<br />

world – there are over 120,000 ancient objects here.<br />

You’ll get up close to the mummified remains of<br />

pharaohs and queens, and see the treasures<br />

unearthed from Tutankhamun’s tomb back in 1922.<br />

Port Said (for Cairo) - EGYPT<br />

Wander around the ruins in memphis, egypt’s first<br />

capital city that was founded in 3100 BC. Best bits<br />

include the Temple of Ptah, the fallen statue of King<br />

ramses ii, and the Sphinx of King amenhopis ii.<br />

ruins aside, the memphis Gardens are filled<br />

with palms, pathways and interesting sculptures,<br />

so find a spot here to relax, too.<br />

maKe your way up to the masada Fortress in a<br />

cable car. it’s set 434 metres above sea level, so the<br />

views are incredible. But it’s the history that draws<br />

most people. it’s the site of the Jews’ last stand<br />

against the romans back in the days of King herod.<br />

explore the ruins of the synagogue and the baths,<br />

as well as herod’s three-tiered palace.<br />

Ashdod - ISRAEL<br />

PaY a visit to old Jaffa, one of the oldest cities in the<br />

world. it’s got a beautiful old port, and its streets are<br />

lined with mosques, museums and markets. What’s<br />

more, if you head to Jaffa’s observation point, you’ll<br />

get unspoilt views over the ‘white city’ of Tel aviv,<br />

so-called because of its Bauhaus architecture.<br />

Limassol - CYPRUS<br />

TaKe a trip to Paphos and explore the Tombs of<br />

the Kings. This underground graveyard dates back<br />

to the 4th century BC and, despite its royal name,<br />

it was actually a burial chamber for aristocrats,<br />

not kings. Journey through the winding passageways<br />

to get a look at the incredible frescoed walls and<br />

the huge doric columns.<br />
