COrFU
ReSoRT INFoRMATIoN
Mountain scenery, sandy beaches and a national cuisine
that makes the most of the island’s natural produce –
it’s all part and parcel of what Corfu has to offer.
From the stripes of the national flag to its sugar cube villas and Aegean waters,
Greece wears a uniform of blue and white. But Corfu throws an extra colour
into the mix – green. Known as the Emerald Isle, the second-largest Greek Island
is covered in cypress trees, olive groves and wild flowers.
Where you choose to stay will depend on the vibe you’re after. Aghios Georgios
and Acharavi, in the north, are two of the quieter resorts. There’s plenty of space on
the wide sandy beaches here, and the candle-lit tavernas tend to be family-run affairs.
In Sidari and Govia, the pace picks up with the introduction of karaoke bars and cafés
serving British breakfasts, but you’ll still find quiet coves on the coast when you need
a bit of down-time. Then there’s Kavos, where strobe lights and DJ booths are
the tools of the trade.
Finally, Corfu’s fertile soil means it’s overflowing with fresh produce. Most of the island’s
restaurants take advantage of the lemons, tomatoes, herbs and olives that grow here.
The result is menus full of speciality dishes, like the herby veal dish, sofrito, and the
tomato-and-beef favourite pastitsada.
Corfu Town
All tangled streets and shuttered houses,
Corfu Town is one good looking capital. It’s built
on a promontory and wedged between two chunky
Venetian fortresses that look like they’ve been
airlifted out of Italy and dropped into the old town.
It comes with a small golden beach and two tiny
harbours, not to mention a wide range of restaurants.
Old Fortress
You can’t miss this imposing fort in Corfu Town.
Originally built back in the 6th century, it was the
Venetians that created its current shape. They
equipped it with cannons and chunky window-less
walls in an effort to protect the island from
sea attacks. Fast forward to today and it’s become
a something of a star on the sightseeing hitlist.
