58. To <strong>the</strong> foregoing rule, <strong>the</strong> following instances are<br />

exceptions, as in <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong> Adjective usually 'precedes <strong>the</strong><br />

Noun.<br />

\st. Numerical Adjectives : Ex.<br />

Veinte hombres. Twentj' men.<br />

La. primera cosa. The first thing.<br />

In referring to royalty <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r dignities, however, <strong>the</strong><br />

Ex.<br />

numerical Adiective follows <strong>the</strong> noun :<br />

Isabel Segunda. Isabelle <strong>the</strong> Second.<br />

Gregorio Primero. Gregory <strong>the</strong> First.<br />

2d. The Adjectives iodo, mucho, poco, pocos, cierto, cada,<br />

varios, tal, (all, much, little, few^ certain, each, several,<br />

such), likewise precede <strong>the</strong> noun : Ex.<br />

Todo el mundo. All <strong>the</strong> world.<br />

Mucho dinero. Much money.<br />

Pocos hombres. Few men.<br />

Ciertos individuos. Certain individuals.<br />

Cierto, never<strong>the</strong>less, in <strong>the</strong> sense <strong>of</strong> sicre, generally follows<br />

<strong>the</strong> Noun : Ex.<br />

Es cosa cierta. It is a certain thing.<br />

Son noticias ciertas. They are certain news.<br />

3d. Adjectives employed as attributes, or that denote<br />

<strong>the</strong> natural or inherent properties <strong>of</strong> Nouns, generally precede<br />

<strong>the</strong>m : Ex.<br />

Los hermosos colores del iris. The beautiful colours <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> rainbow.<br />

El duro hierro. The hard iron.<br />

4th. Adjectives used as epi<strong>the</strong>ts, precede <strong>the</strong> Noun : Ex.<br />

El soberbioLdciier, El paciente 3oh. The proud Lucifer, The patient Job.<br />

5th. Adjectives that terminate in isimo, generally precede<br />

<strong>the</strong> Noun : Ex.<br />

Son hermosísimas obras. They are most beautiful works,<br />
